What to do
The Alfama is Lisbon's oldest district, featuring steep cobbled medieval streets and best known for its Castelo de São Jorge, a castle set high on the hill of the same name. One of the most interesting sights is the Romanesque Sé (Cathedral).
Other Lisbon attractions include: the National Coach Museum, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the Castle of St George. There are many art museums worth visiting, two of the best ones are the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and the Museu da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
Lisbon’s nightlife starts at Bairro Alto where you can find fine restaurants, loud bars and happening nightclubs. The riverfront of the Tejo also offers an interesting stop where visitors like to stroll across the ornately tiled placas.
What to see - by car hire

Forty-five minutes away by hire car is Sintra. Once the hangout of kings and queens, along with many other nobility and writers, it’s now a major tourist attraction. The main site to see here is the Palácio Nacional da Pena, a Disney-style folly built by King Ferdinand in the 19th century. Also nearby is the peaceful Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish castle).
