What to do

The main draw card on Antigua is its great beaches and wonderful diving spots. Most of Antigua’s beaches are public. With coral canyons, wall drops, and sea caves, the diving here is incredible. Other water activities include windsurfing and game fishing.

Dickenson Bay offers about any type of water sport you might fancy. The beach here is backed by several hotels, resorts, and open-air cafés and restaurants. More private is Runaway Bay, which also has a beautiful white-sand beach.

The main place to go on the island is English Harbor. It offers tourists the chance to visit restored buildings, hilltop forts, and museums. Today the harbor is full of sleek, million-dollar yachts. Fort Shirley offers great views over the bay plus some 18th century ruins and fun, local bars.

The capital of the island is St John’s, situated in the northeast on Heritage Quay, and is known for its shops, churches, museums, galleries, and restaurants. St John’s isn't big and you can easily walk to the different attractions.

What to see - by hire car

There are many great places to visit if you have a hire car. Just to the west of St John’s is Deep Bay, which is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The Andes wreck looms out of the waters here, which makes curious attraction for divers.
